Extended OMNI2 DATA SET The main purpose of creating the "extended" directory is to allow the extended ("dynamic") OIMN2 dataset be created and managed as necessary. This "extensions" allows the number of OMNI parameters to be changed; for example, a new parameter(s) needs to be added to 55 original OMNI parameters at the end of each data file record (see upper level dir. "../omni/low_res_omni/"). This upgrade allows us to add more parameters to OMNI2 in the future. Therefore, a user should read first the format description ( see below) before applying the OMNI data from the new "extented" directory to his or her scientific application. As the first step, a new parameter "Solar Lyman Alpha index" has been recently added to the end of all OMNI data records as the 56th parameter; these new OMNI data files are now made available in the "extented" directory. Thus, the "extented" directory now contains data files with the original 55 OMNI parameters (from the directory "/data/omni/low_res_omni/") plus one more, 56th parameter " Solar Lyman Alpha". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The new format for this new data set is: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- OMNI2_YYYY.DAT FORMAT DESCRIPTION WORD FORMAT Fill Value MEANING UNITS/COMMENTS 1 I4 Year 1963, 1964, etc. 2 I4 Decimal Day January 1 = Day 1 3 I3 Hour 0, 1,...,23 4 I5 9999 Bartels rotation number 5 I3 99 ID for IMF spacecraft See table 6 I3 99 ID for SW plasma spacecraft See table 7 I4 999 # of points in the IMF averages 8 I4 999 # of points in the plasma averages 9 F6.1 999.9 Field Magnitude Average |B| 1/N SUM |B|, nT 10 F6.1 999.9 Magnitude of Average Field Vector sqrt(Bx^2+By^2+Bz^2) 11 F6.1 999.9 Lat.Angle of Aver.
